How to choose the best chiropractor? Part 1

Where do I start?

When looking for a chiropractor, there are many things to consider. Choosing one is no different than choosing any other type of services. Gone are the days when you can look in the phonebook to pick a chiropractor that is the closest to you. Remember, you are dealing with the health of you and your family. We often shop around even for things such as getting your tyre fixed or buying furniture. So why wouldn't you do so with health practitioners like chiropractors.

Chiropractors come in all shapes and sizes, and contrary to popular belief, they don't all have the same objectives. While some of them are focused on removing interference to your nervous system and on maximising your body's ability to function at a higher level, some are focused on helping you deal with musculoskeletal pain due to injuries or degenerative changes over the years and others are committed to creating wellness in your families' life by helping your bodies to develop new strategies to cope with stress and trauma.

Confused? Wait, there is more. There are literally thousands of different types of chiropractic techniques out there. What this means is that what one chiropractor does could be vastly different to another, and yet their objective could be the same.

If you are confused then you are not the only one. Over the years chiropractic has earned its place as a mainstream health profession by constantly developing and advancing in its philosophy, science and application. So the diversity in this profession is the result of this advancement. The old belief that chiropractic is only good for low back pain is an outdated one. There is a huge range of options available. It is important to pick one that is suitable for your family's needs.

So how would you even begin to find a chiropractor that is right for you and your family? Below, I have outlined a few crucial steps to get you on your way.

What do you consider the most important thing when choosing a health practitioner?

  • Convenience, opening hours and location etc
  • Cost
  • Personality and values of the practitioner
  • The way the place is ran
  • How the place feel to you, the 'vibe' of it
  • Word of mouth
  • Quality of service
  • Their marketing

Why am I looking for a chiropractor?

First off, it is crucial that you know why you are looking for a chiropractor. Most people go to a chiropractor because they have heard from others that it is a good thing to do, or they may have seen an advertisment somewhere which prompted them to go for an initial consultation. Some of them may be seeking help with improving function of their body, such as wanting more energy, better concentration, or they may be wanting to increase their bodies ability to heal. Others may be seeking a chiropractor because they have just had a sport or work related injury, or some kind of pain.

It is not enough to just go by what your friends of collegues are saying about their chiropractor. Although their experiences will be a tremendous help, you must keep in mind that your health objective may be different to theirs. So to save time and to minimise the risk of dissatisfaction later on, it is a good idea to know exactly why you and your family are seeking the service of a chiropractor.

There are many books on the market regarding health and chiropractic, some are good, some are not so good. I have found some books that are by far the best for someone who wants to get started in picking a chiropractor, as well as wanting to take steps to live a healthier life.

Chiropractic Made Simple by Dr John Reizer – This book is exactly what the title says. He leads the reader by the hand to discover what chiropractic really is. You can't go wrong with this book if you want to have a relatively quick read while helping you answer the question why chiropractic is right for you.

The Chiropractic Way: How Chiropractic Care Can Stop Your Pain and Help You Regain Your Health Without Drugs or Surgery by Dr Michael Lenarz

In part 2 of Choosing the best chiropractor, where do I start? I will continue to explain how to choose the right chiropractor by outlining a number of important things to look out for.

I first started seeing our base chiro, who could not dispense supplements. I later discovered a chiro off base who recommended Standard Process supplements. Changed my life for the better.
